Wildcat Creek Is Behind Most of Tilden's Detours This Fall

This week, large trucks are using Wildcat Creek Trail in Tilden Nature Area. The East Bay Regional Park District's notice says they are there through Oct. 30, 2026, for the "Lake Anza dredging project." If you know Lake Anza from summer weekends, that name suggests crews are digging out the swim lagoon. They aren't. The work is upstream, and it belongs to a group of projects along Wildcat Creek that account for most of the park's detours this fall.

Some closures in Tilden right now have nothing to do with the creek. The ones with fixed dates, published plans and a finished result mostly come back to the same stretch of water.

The Lake Anza Dredging Isn't in Lake Anza

The state environmental filing for this work has a more precise name: the Tilden Golf Course Sediment Basin Dredging and Maintenance Project. According to the notice filed with the state in August 2023, the goal is to keep that basin working "in order to better capture sediment and prevent sedimentation downstream at Lake Anza." The project would remove about 360 cubic yards of sediment.

The basin isn't new. The same filing says it was built in 2012 as part of the Wildcat Creek Restoration Project, to stabilize the creek channel. Think of it as a catch tray. Silt that would otherwise wash down and settle in Lake Anza collects in the basin until crews dredge it out. The trucks on Wildcat Creek Trail this week are hauling that sediment out.

The lake itself is quiet. Lake Anza's swim season ran on weekends and holidays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., from May 16 through Sept. 27. The District hasn't posted 2027 dates yet. Its water-quality listing for Lake Anza shows no blue-green algae advisory at this time.

This Week, the Detour and the Truck Route Are the Same Trail

The overlap matters if you walk or ride in Tilden Nature Area. Since Sept. 21, the Loop Road between Lone Oak Staging/Picnic Site and Wildcat View Group Camp has been closed for tree work on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The District lists the closure as running until late October. The posted detour, for hikers and cyclists alike, is Wildcat Creek Trail past the Environmental Education Center and Little Farm.

That is the same trail the sediment trucks use from Oct. 22 to Oct. 30. On a weekday morning this week, the main bypass around one closure is also the haul route for a second project. Both should be finished by the end of the month. Until then, the District asks trail users to use caution and follow directions from crews.

The Loop Road tree work is part of a bigger program. EBRPD is running several large fuel-reduction projects in Tilden from May through December 2026, removing eucalyptus, heavy brush and woody debris. Those projects bring intermittent closures to park roads and trails. The District's project list names Golf Course Drive, the Merry-Go-Round area, Jewel Lake Trail, Loop Road and Wildcat Creek Trail among the affected areas. So Wildcat Creek Trail may see crews again before the year is out.

At Brook Road, the Creek Gets Rebuilt and a Trail Segment Goes Away

The biggest creek project is near Brook Road, and it will change the park map permanently. The District's Wildcat Gorge project page says crews are removing a concrete creek crossing that blocks the migration of native rainbow trout. They're rebuilding the channel with natural rock and bioengineered features, clearing invasive plants and replanting with natives to stabilize the banks.

The part trail users will notice is the old Wildcat Gorge Trail at Brook Road. A section of it is fenced during construction and will stay closed for good. Two new ADA-accessible bridges reconnect the trail system, and the project adds visitor access around them:

  1. A 30-foot bridge over a small tributary
  2. An 80-foot bridge over Wildcat Creek
  3. An accessible path to a new creekside observation deck
  4. Two new ADA parking stalls in a regraded section of the existing lot, plus bioretention features that clean stormwater before it reaches the creek

According to the District, the bridges will create new trail loops once construction is done. Granite Rock Company is the contractor. Construction runs from July through December 2026. The park's alert says access is planned to reopen by January 2027.

The Brook Road work and the sediment basin serve the same creek. The 2012 restoration project added a structure to stabilize the creek. This fall, one crew is maintaining that structure upstream while another removes an old concrete crossing that worked against the creek. Both are aimed at the same water: less silt reaching Lake Anza, and an open path for trout.

November 1 Changes How You Drive In

The next change on the calendar is seasonal. It moves the driving route for anyone heading to the Botanic Garden or the Brazil Building. Every year, South Park Drive closes to cars from November 1 to April 1 to protect migrating newts.

Normally the South Park Drive entrance off Grizzly Peak Boulevard is a direct way to trailheads, picnic areas, the Botanic Garden and the Brazil Building. From Sunday, Nov. 1, drivers need another way in. The District's directions list the Shasta Road entrance for the golf course, Brazil Building, Botanic Garden, Lake Anza, Inspiration Point, the Merry-Go-Round, the Environmental Education Center and Little Farm. You can also come in from the east on Wildcat Canyon Road off San Pablo Dam Road, which reaches Inspiration Point, the Botanic Garden and the Brazil Building. For the Environmental Education Center, Little Farm, the Merry-Go-Round and Lake Anza, the closest entrance is Canon Drive on the Berkeley side.

The Closures That Don't Come With a Date

The creek projects all have end dates, and so do the Loop Road tree work and the fuel-reduction program. Three other changes in the park this fall have no posted end date, and they're the ones to check before you go.

Laurel Canyon Trail. The upper 0.43 miles in Tilden Nature Area is closed until further notice because of storm damage. The District last updated the notice Oct. 17, 2026.

The Merry-Go-Round. As of the District's Oct. 17 alert, it is closed because PG&E shut off the power, which leaves it without power or restrooms. The alert gives no estimate for when power will return. The Berkeley Scanner reported that the wider Berkeley-area shutoff was planned around dry offshore winds. A follow-up from the Scanner said PG&E expected to restore affected East Bay customers Friday afternoon. The District's alert, posted after that story, still listed the carousel as closed. Check the EBRPD alerts and closures page before promising anyone a ride.

Little Farm. The farm is open during regular park hours, but the District now says public feeding of the animals has been discontinued. In March 2025, Berkeleyside reported that signs at the time barred feeding and petting as an avian-flu precaution, while the District said there were no documented cases at Little Farm. The current notice gives no date or reason for the change, so leave the celery at home.

What's Running on a Normal Schedule

Most of Tilden is open, and the fall and holiday calendar is already posted.

Tilden Golf Course 10 Golf Course Drive, Berkeley Open daily Seasonal hours and fees are posted by the course operator

EBRPD's November–December 2026 activity guide also has a few dated programs. Tilden Tots on the Farm runs Wednesday, Nov. 18, with a turkey theme, and Wednesday, Dec. 16, with a focus on animals in winter. A Monday birding walk at Tilden is set for Dec. 14. The truck traffic on Wildcat Creek Trail is scheduled to end Oct. 30. If the District's January target holds, the new bridges at Brook Road open at the start of the year.
