For most of the past six years, walking east on California Street after dark meant passing a dark brick façade at the corner of Taylor. The Huntington Hotel closed in 2020 and stayed closed. The Big 4 dining room, the piano, the Nob Hill Spa pool with the city view, all of it locked behind construction fencing. If you live on the hill, you know how much that one shuttered block flattened the evening rhythm of the neighborhood.
That block is loud again. And it is not the only thing that changed here between last summer and this one.
The thesis of this post is simple. For years, Nob Hill residents had to walk downhill for a good meal or a new opening worth trying. In 2026 that pattern reversed. The hill now has more first-run restaurants, cocktail rooms, and cultural programming inside a five-block radius than it has had in a decade, and much of it opened in the last six months.
The Huntington Relight
The ribbon-cutting was in March. The Huntington Hotel reopened on Nob Hill in early March 2026, with an official neon sign relighting and a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Daniel Lurie. If you were walking the dog past Huntington Park that week, you probably saw the crowd.
The building had been closed since 2020. Greg Flynn of Flynn Properties and Highgate bought it in 2023 and handed the interiors to Ken Fulk. A full renovation led by San Francisco designer Ken Fulk brought back the hotel's 143 rooms and suites, the Big Four restaurant in its 50th anniversary year, a new cocktail salon called Arabella's, and the three-level Nob Hill Spa.
Three things matter for people who live here, not for people booking a room.
The Big 4 is back, and it is still recognizably itself. The Big Four reopened inside the Huntington Hotel on March 17, 2026, in its 50th anniversary year. Designer Ken Fulk preserved the wood-paneled, club-room interior, and chef David Intonato kept classics like the $35 chicken pot pie while bringing back tableside service and nightly piano. If you were worried Fulk would strip the green leather and the etched glass, he did not. The room is the room.
Arabella's is genuinely new. Arabella's is a new cocktail salon inside the renovated Huntington Hotel. It features rare, decades-old spirits and a vintage French bar cart, and is named in a nod to Arabella Huntington. That last detail is a local pun worth catching. Arabella Huntington is the same person who in 1915 donated the entire block across California Street to the City of San Francisco, asking that it be turned into a public park. The bar you are drinking in now is named for the woman who gave you Huntington Park.
The Nob Hill Spa is open to non-guests again. The Nob Hill Spa reopened with the hotel in March 2026, reimagined across three levels with a pool, sauna, and treatment rooms. For years, residents at Crescent Nob Hill or the older co-ops along Sacramento Street had to travel for anything comparable. That is no longer true.
The Standard's April piece captured the pricing tier plainly. The 143 rooms and suites range in price from around $600 to north of $1,000 a night. That is context for the class of foot traffic the hotel is bringing back to the corner. It also explains why the Big 4 will be hard to walk into on a Friday for a while.
The Quieter Openings You May Have Missed
The Huntington got the ribbon and the mayor. Meanwhile a cluster of much smaller places opened between January and June, and they are the ones you will actually use on a Tuesday.
Denya Ramen is the one to know first. Denya Ramen is a casual Nob Hill spot that's all about Hakata-style ramen. Pick from pork or chicken-based broth, plus add-ons like shio, black garlic, and sesame. From the looks of it, their dining room seems well-suited for dates and small groups. The Infatuation reviewed it in June and suggested paying up for the deluxe fixings.
Goldenette opened as an all-day diner. The Infatuation covered it in April, describing it as an all-day diner in Nob Hill with solid breakfast plates and sandwiches. Diner in the Nob Hill sense, not the Tenderloin sense.
Tahona Mercado is the interesting hybrid. Tahona Mercado is a Nob Hill market and bottle shop with excellent tacos. Bottle shop with a taco program. Good for a walk-in dinner when you did not plan one.
Quack House is Lower Nob Hill and it is takeout. Quack House is a Lower Nob Hill takeout spot specializing in great Cantonese roast meats. Useful to know if you live below California Street and want roast duck on the way home.
MJ's Cafe covers the weekday breakfast slot. The Infatuation flagged the breakfast burritos and the chicken caesar wrap as required ordering at MJ's Cafe in Nob Hill.
Always Awake Coffee is the newest of the coffee bars in Lower Nob Hill. Always Awake Coffee is a cafe in Lower Nob Hill with espresso and matcha. You can get your latte with caramel syrup and crushed nuts, milk foam, or peanut butter cream, and there's a communal table if you want to stick around.
There is also Golden Focaccia on Post, which sits just at the southern edge of the neighborhood. It has been getting picked up on the hot-and-new lists as a sandwich and pinsa shop, a Nob Hill sandwich and pizza shop where the headliner of the menu, naturally, is the focaccia. Choose from 10 different sandwiches featuring the bread that are stuffed with things like mortadella, bresaola, and porchetta. On the pie front, you can choose between six pinsas with the classic margherita or pepperoni as well as ones topped with tuna or pesto and roasted eggplant.
Places That Were Already Here and Still Deserve the Walk
New openings are the story. But the reason Nob Hill's food density is finally interesting is that the new arrivals sit on top of a bench of very established places. If you have out-of-town guests staying for a weekend, the itinerary now writes itself:
- Swan Oyster Depot on Polk, still one of the neighborhood's anchors. Swan Oyster Depot is a century-old seafood counter in Nob Hill with perpetual lines and solid old-school dishes.
- Bob's Donuts on Polk for the 2 a.m. version of the neighborhood. Bob's Donuts is open 24 hours a day, so you can get a donut whenever you need one.
- Bar Bibi for a small-plates night in. Bar Bibi is a natural wine bar in Nob Hill with great small plates.
- Wabi-Sabi for a low-effort sushi decision. Wabi-Sabi is a solid sushi spot in Nob Hill.
- House of Prime Rib and Harris' if the guests want the old San Francisco version of dinner. Both still rank on The Infatuation's Nob Hill index in 2026.
- Restaurant Naides, a Filipino fine dining tasting menu that quietly became one of the highest-rated rooms in the neighborhood. The Infatuation calls it a fine dining spot in Nob Hill that serves a tasting menu inspired by Filipino classics that's so good you'll find any reason to go back.
Stack the new arrivals against that list and the hill feels denser than it has in years.
Grace Cathedral Is Programming Like a Venue Now
If you have lived on Nob Hill for a while, you know Grace Cathedral has always been a working church that occasionally opened its doors for a concert or a labyrinth walk. In 2026 the calendar is heavier and more contemporary than that.
The one to see this year is AURA, the immersive light and music installation by Moment Factory. It has been in the nave since 2023, and per the producers, Aura will stay in Grace Cathedral until December 2026, end of the year. If you have been meaning to walk your visiting parents through it, the runway is shorter than it looks.
There is also a new commissioned piece from the cathedral's artist-in-residence program. RESONANCE is a sound sculpture created with our silent bells and organ pipes by our 2026 Artist in Residence Bill Fontana. Fontana has created works with the bells of Notre...Dame among other landmarks. Free, quiet, and worth twenty minutes on a lunch break.
One practical note the cathedral itself makes, and every Nob Hill resident already knows: parking on Nob Hill is fairly scarce. The California Street cable car and the 1 California bus both stop within a block of the Great Steps. Walk if you can.
The Small Version of the Real Estate Point
The reason any of this matters beyond dinner reservations is quieter. Nob Hill's identity as a residential neighborhood is disproportionately shaped by a handful of anchor institutions on the crown of the hill. Grace Cathedral. Huntington Park. The grand hotels along California Street. When one of those anchors went dark in 2020, the daily rhythm of the streets around it dimmed with it. The 2026 restart is the first time in six years that the full set of anchors is running at once, alongside a genuine wave of small independent openings a few blocks in either direction. That is what a neighborhood feeling alive looks like in practice, and it is a change residents can measure by the noise on their own block.
